Teleport targets e-commerce with Avalon Airport Melbourne tie-up

Teleport and Avalon Airport Melbourne have signed an agreement to establish a new operations hub at the Australian airport as the companies target growing e-commerce demand between the country and Southeast Asia. The two companies said that the new hub will enable faster and more efficient movement of international e-commerce shipments into Australia to capitalise on growing demand. In a press release, the two pointed out that Australians spent nearly $18.9bn on online e-commerce platforms last year, which was up 13% compared with 2024 levels. Teleport chief executive Pete Chareonwongsak said that the airline had been attracted to the airport in part becuase there are no flight curfews in place. "Establishing our latest strategic operations hub at Avalon Airport Melbourne is a deliberate move to strengthen the Teleport Network in Oceania," he said. "Cross-border e-commerce requires rapid, specialised processing, and our customers need faster, more reliable connectivity. "Avalon Airport is the right fit because it delivers curfew-free capacity processing, fast turnarounds and the flexibility to handle eCommerce alongside general cargo." He added: "Our proven history of scaling throughput across primary hubs like Kuala Lumpur, and secondary hubs like Don Mueang, and Phuket in Thailand and Bali in Indonesia, gives us full confidence in the massive potential this partnership will deliver for the region. We believe secondary hubs are a proven engine for air cargo growth." Teleport, which is the logistics arm of Air Asia and also operates three Airbus A321 freighters, currently moves cargo into primary Australian airports, namely Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, from key Asian origin markets including China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Vietnam. It expects to start operations into Avalon later this year, initially moving e-commerce volumes from China. The partnership is the "next phase" of Teleport's global network expansion across Oceania, the Middle East, and Europe. "The partnership leverages an alternative international freight gateway capable of supporting high-growth e-commerce logistics as international freight volumes expand," the two said in a press release. "It also has the potential to diversify Australia's freight capacity, strengthen Victoria's international trade links and support continued growth in the state's logistics sector." Ari Suss, chief executive of Avalon Airport Melbourne, said the partnership demonstrated the airport's growing role in international freight and logistics. "Teleport has chosen Avalon because we can offer the capacity, speed and flexibility needed to support a fast-growing e-commerce network. "Together, we are building a long-term logistics partnership that will strengthen international trade connections and create new opportunities for Victoria."

MSC box ship sinking after attempt to escape typhoon

An MSC containership is sinking in Zhoushan port after stormy weather disrupted repairs on the vessel. Vessel-tracking data shows that the 2006-built 8,401 teu MSC Silvana VIII, which MSC deployed on a Far East-South America service, had arrived at the Guojiayou Island shipyard district in Zhoushan on 22 June for repairs. When Typhoon Bavi hit on 11 July, MSC Silvana VIII left the dock and moved to the other side of the channel ,off Daishan, but appeared to have grounded on some rocks. The engine room and several cargo holds were flooded, while the vessel's stern became submerged. Around 3,000 tonnes of bunker fuel were reportedly pumped out to lighten the vessel and prevent leaks, but as MSC Silvana VIII sank deeper, salvage operations became increasingly challenging. Vessel traffic in the busy Zhoushan area complicated the salvage efforts, which weredelayed again when Typhoon Dolphin made landfall yesterday. The cause of the grounding, the extent of structural damage below the waterline, and the next stage of the salvage operation remained unconfirmed. The incident has raised concerns over the vessel's maintenance and survey compliance, in view of its age, with questions concerning its survey history and class status. MSC has not issued a public statement. Maritime authorities and salvage experts were expected to assess the condition of MSC Silvana VIII, along with the environmental impact and potential oil spill risks, before determining further recovery measures.

Lufthansa Cargo aims to speed up import processing at Frankfurt

Lufthansa Cargo has signed up to use cargo community software firm FAIR@Link's customs processing module to help speed up import shipment processing. The cargo airline will use the FRA-OS module for consolidated import shipments that brings together all relevant customs information in one place, enabling customs procedures to be initiated partly automatically. Under normal circumstances, customs presentation must be carried out by the handling agent immediately after an aircraft lands. With FRA-OS, however, authorised participants can arrange for goods to be presented to customs at a later point in time by freight forwarders operating customs-bonded warehouses at the airport. In addition, shipment status information provides complete end-to-end traceability on the ground. Allivate, which provides the FAIR@Link system, said that the key benefit for Lufthansa Cargo is the deferred customs presentation. For Lufthansa Cargo, participation in FRA-OS means that eligible shipments can take a more direct route through the import process. Import cargo is transferred directly from the apron via the Neutral Cargo Transfer Point (NFÜP) - a fast transfer and handling facility for air cargo shipments - to the freight forwarders. This eliminates one processing step: previously, these shipments first had to undergo customs clearance in Lufthansa Cargo's handling warehouse before they could be released. "This is made possible through continuous shipment tracking from the aircraft to the bonded warehouse. Thanks to this transparency, customs authorities allow customs presentation to take place anywhere within the customs area of Frankfurt Airport," explained Matthias Hupka, managing director of Allivate. "Thanks to the option of deferred customs presentation, we are able to hand over cargo to freight forwarders significantly earlier. Especially for time-sensitive e-commerce logistics, faster processes create tangible benefits for our customers," said Tobias Braun, project manager at Lufthansa Cargo. Allivate said that In CargoCity South, around 90% of the handling agents and freight forwarders already participate in the platform. "The integration of Lufthansa Cargo marks another important milestone in the ongoing digitalisation of import processes at Frankfurt Airport," Allivate said. "The more stakeholders participate at the platform, the greater the opportunities to standardise customs procedures, reduce interfaces and accelerate cargo flows across the airport."
